Magnesium hydroxide, as an important inorganic chemical raw material, is widely used in flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, and other fields. Its preparation and use involve several key technical skills, and mastering these key techniques is crucial for improving product quality and efficiency.

In terms of preparation, the ammonia method, lime method, and electrolysis method are the main industrial methods. The ammonia method is widely adopted due to its mild reaction and high product purity. Controlling the reaction pH is a key skill-typically, the pH should be maintained between 9 and 10 to ensure sufficient precipitation of the magnesium hydroxide and avoid the formation of impurities such as magnesium carbonate. Stirring speed is also crucial. Moderate stirring (approximately 200-300 rpm) promotes uniform crystal nucleation and prevents particle agglomeration. Furthermore, temperature control directly affects crystallinity, and low temperatures (40-60°C) are conducive to the production of highly dispersed nanosized magnesium hydroxide.

In the application stage, skills are particularly important in the flame retardant field. Magnesium hydroxide requires surface modification (such as stearic acid coating) to improve its compatibility with the organic matrix; otherwise, the mechanical properties of the material will deteriorate. Pharmaceutical-grade magnesium hydroxide requires strict aseptic processing and particle size control, typically using airflow milling to obtain 2-5μm particles to meet sustained-release requirements. In the environmental protection field, when using magnesium hydroxide to neutralize acidic wastewater, the order and rate of addition directly impact the stability of pH adjustment. Batch addition is recommended to avoid localized over-alkalinity.

It is important to maintain a dry environment during storage and transportation. Magnesium hydroxide is highly hygroscopic and easily clumps and loses its effectiveness when exposed to humid air. The systematic application of these key techniques can significantly improve the effectiveness and economic value of magnesium hydroxide in various scenarios.
